Minnesota Department of Commerce Detects Scams Utilizing Artificial Intelligence and Fake Websites

Scammers are really stepping up their game these days. They're not just sticking to the old tricks; they're using all sorts of fancy tech stuff like fake websites and even artificial intelligence to cheat folks out of their hard-earned cash. It's a real headache for folks trying to stop them, according to Marty Fleischhacker, who's a bigwig at the Minnesota Department of Commerce.

"It's like this whole scamming business is booming," Marty says. "You ask anybody in the cops or the banks like me, and they'll all say the same thing: these scammers are here to stay. They're getting smarter and sneakier by the day. It's tough for us to keep up and put a lid on their shenanigans."

Now that tax season is upon us, scams are at the forefront of everyone's minds. People are scrambling to get their taxes sorted, and that's like ringing the dinner bell for scammers.

Marty's advice? File your taxes early, before some scammer beats you to it.

"With all these phishing scams and big companies getting hacked left and right, your info's out there for the taking," he warns.

And who are the scammers targeting the most? Well, it's the seniors in Minnesota, especially those who are 65 and up, and folks who are most vulnerable to financial fraud.

They've got all sorts of tricks up their sleeves, from calling you up and telling you've won the lottery (yeah, right!) to pretending to be your online soulmate. They even make fake websites that look like the real deal, just to trick you into handing over your cash.

"We've got some of these scammers right here in Minnesota," Marty reveals. "We're teaming up with local banks to spot dodgy transactions in people's accounts. And we're working with the feds to try and get folks their money back. But these scammers are like ninjas, moving money around without a trace."

But don't fret! The Minnesota Attorney General's Office and the Department of Commerce have got your back. They've got all sorts of resources to help you steer clear of these scams.

And the golden rule? If something smells fishy, don't hesitate to ask for help.

"These scammers are real smooth talkers," Marty says. "They'll try to mess with your head and get you all worked up. If something feels off, pick up the phone and call someone—whether it's the cops or us. We know how these scammers operate, and we can help you out. Don't let them bully you into staying silent. Take a breather, talk to someone, and let's put these scammers out of business."
