Quad to Shut Down Saratoga Springs Plant Due to Decline in Printing Industry

 In a move with significant local impact, Quad, a magazine printing company employing over 400 people at its Spa City facility in Saratoga Springs, is set to shutter its doors by May 4. The decision comes as part of a broader effort by the company to consolidate its operations across various states.

y has faced challenges amidst sharp declines in the printed media industry. The news of the impending closure reached employees through an email last Friday, as reported by The Daily Gazette.

The email, obtained by Gazette, explained that the closure is a strategic business decision aligning with industry trends. These trends include volume contractions in specific print categories, such as newsweeklies, which played a pivotal role in building the plant's reputation. Additionally, the decision is influenced by rising postal costs.

Quad aims to support its affected workforce through various measures. Some employees will be offered relocation opportunities, while others will receive severance packages. Health insurance coverage for up to 120 days will be provided based on the length of service.

Formerly known as Quad Graphics, the company has been a fixture in Saratoga Springs for almost four decades. This announcement follows a string of recent developments where manufacturers have disclosed plans to relocate from the Capital Region to other states. In this case, work from the closing Saratoga Springs facility will be shifted to Quad's home state of Wisconsin, as well as to locations in Georgia and Massachusetts. The move reflects the company's strategic realignment amid the evolving landscape of the printing industry.
