Google Renames Bard to Gemini and Introduces a Paid Version Powered by Advanced AI Model

Exactly one year ago, Google introduced Bard, its AI-powered rival to ChatGPT. Bard, fueled by the LaMDA model, initially took the spotlight. However, Google made a switch in December to Gemini, marking a significant transition. Now, the service is adopting the name of the model behind its power. Farewell, Bard. Welcome, Gemini.

Gemini now operates on the Gemini Pro 1.0 model, extending its reach to over 230 countries and mastering over 40 languages. Accessible through a web interface (link provided), Gemini also offers a new app for user convenience.

This chatbot engages users through text or voice interactions. What sets Gemini apart is its "multi-modal" capability, allowing users to input photos or request image generation.

While Gemini remains free to use, it now offers a tier-2 solution known as Gemini Advanced, powered by the Gemini Ultra 1.0 model. Following a complimentary 2-month trial period, Advanced is available for $20/€22/£19/₹1,950 as part of the Google One AI Premium Plan, which includes 2TB of storage and other premium benefits (typically priced at $10). Google plans to integrate Gemini into Gmail, Google Docs, and other services soon, previously referred to as "Duet AI." Gemini Advanced debuts today in over 150 countries, initially supporting only English (with further language support in the pipeline).

The Gemini app is now downloadable for Android and iOS, as part of the Google app suite.

On Android devices, Gemini replaces the Google Assistant. Activated in the same manner by saying "Hey Google" or pressing the power button, users can utilize Gemini to summarize articles or create captions for photos. Meanwhile, traditional voice control functions such as setting timers, making calls, and controlling smart home devices will continue to be supported via Gemini.
